Kampar, July 26 - While fresh and future graduates often feel the fear that they will not last in the working environment, in reality it may not be as harsh as they thought.

During a Career Day held in University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) today, Mr Nizam Mohd Jamil, Human Resources and Administration of Press Metal Berhad said that common issues with fresh graduates is they easily break down when the pressure comes. The pressure from the nature of the work (engineering) and organizational working style are often the reasons behind the stress that fresh graduates face.

“They (fresh graduates) get into conflicts with the officers because they think they are right and straight away disagree with their superiors, but there is more than what they know and learn in school,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tien Zhang Chun, a student that visited the event said that he really believes the stories and reminders of how tough the working environment will be.

“I am a mediocre student, and I am not extrovert as well. I think it will be quite tough for me.”

Although academic performances are the first priority that companies seek, soft skills are always a part of the criteria that is highly demanded. This is because all work require interactions between humans, and a good employee is the one that can sustain it.

According to Amanda Lim, an exhibitionist for Inter-Excel Advisory Sdn Bhd (which caters for potential employees for aviation hospitality industry), the main reasons on getting rejected after probation period is attitude problems.

“We can’t work with people who are stubborn or two-faced. If you do not know how to do your work, we can teach, but we don’t have time to teach what good attitude is,” she added.

Other than attitudes, fresh graduates may also face problems in working because they are still feeling confused on the path of career that they choose.

Above all, companies may still have considerations and empathy towards fresh graduates.

“We are not that cruel. For any conflict, we will always ensure them (fresh graduates) get guidance that they need. We will explain thoroughly to them on why and how to solve the problems. After that, we monitor them on daily basis. We don’t easily sack them for it. We are not that cruel,” said Nizam.

UTAR Career Day was held from 10am to 4pm today. The event was fruitful with more than 50 companies’ participations and talks.
